The five best phrases for constructive feedback

The five best phrases for constructive feedbackThe five best phrases for constructive feedbackOne of the most important, and yet, most challenging role of being a manager is providing feedback to employees. Providing the necessary critical assessment to ensure their juniors are continuously improving and being challenged is not only required during annual reviews, but in real-time. Every boss man and boss lady has their own delegation style, but perfecting the fine art of respectfully and effectively managing others with spoken word takes practice. And for many, the courage to potentially ruffle feathers. As workplace expert, Amy Cooper Hakim, Ph.D., explains managers sometimes struggle to deliver pinpoint and articulate areas of improvement, for fear it can upset their employee, cause them to grow resentful, or even less productive. To avoid this reaction, delivery method is incredibly important. The employee needs to feel valued, respected, and capable. The feedback will help the em ployee to accomplish required goals more efficiently, creating a win-win for everyone, she explains.I see where youre going with this After giving your next-in-line a project you felt they were ready for, they started off in the right direction, but ended up missing a turn, and now theyre feeling a little lost. geschftliches miteinander coach Christine Agro suggests this phrase as a starting point, since it acknowledges that while there was work done and it isnt necessarily accurate, the employee isnt in trouble. Instead, they just need you to redirect them. From here, you can allow them to explain their approach, then you can explain how to realign with the core goals. Then together, create a better and targeted roadmap to success.Heres what I need you to improve. There are times to use colorful, encouraging language and boost the ego of an entry-level professional, and then there are times when cutting to the chase is more impactful. Hakim says when providing guidance to a younger employee, laying out their strengths and weakness in black and white can make your expectations easier to understand. Its okay to be direct by saying Heres what youre doing correctly. and Heres where you need to improve, she explains. Good employees want to improve. Clear and direct messaging is critical and, often, well-received.When they have an outline of could use improvement and what is going well, they are better prepared to not only take proactive steps to grow, but they will feel more comfortable asking you questions since you provided easy-to-understand feedback in a calm, kind and professional manner. We are off to a great start.Even with deadlines set, designs in motion and a continuous stream of emails, your project is already falling behind. Your employee was meant to be at the helm of the deliverables and you may be frustrated with their performance, but it is important to recognize it is not a one-man or one-woman show to get a job done. This is why career expert Jill Tipograph stresses the power of the word we. Regardless if you were at fault or not, making yourself part of the group creates trust and camaraderie. You are not trying to sugar coat actual feedback, but demonstrate that everyone can learn from any error and that there is a supportive structure for the individual, she explains. Use the we because as a team you are in it together, owning the final outcomes collectively. This is really creative. Lets look if we can fine tune your approach. When you discuss productivity hacks with your peers, chances are high you will all reveal a different tactic. The same way goes for email organization. Or your philosophy toward the length of meetings - and the frequency of them. One of the difficult parts of becoming an empathetic leader is understanding your employees will not always approach a task the same way you would. Giving feedback here can be tricky, but if their methodology is getting a project off track, discuss the issue with an open mind . As Argo says, your main objective is ensuring work is completed, not changing the style of someone elses genius.Acknowledging their schritte helps an employee see that you value their effort and by taking what they have done, and then reviewing against goals and criteria helps a manager better focus and direct the employee, she explains.Youre great at this. This needs work. But this is amazing.Ham and cheese, peanut butter and jelly and manager and managee. Sure, it is tried but its true for a reason the sandwich method works. As the name suggests, this way of presenting constructive feedback requires a manager to put the advice between two compliments. Hakim says this can be a way of softening your advice, especially for a member of your team that could take any criticism harshly or sensitively. Before you make up a compliment that doesnt actually pertain to the hours theyve spent trying to meet your goals, Hakim urges managers to think of two sincere, genuine positives about the ir performance. Even if they are missing the mark currently, employees arent oblivious, and they will be able to tell if youre making something up on the fly. After youve served them the sandwich, make sure to offer your availability to help them progress to the next level.

Uncover the Candidates Communication Skills in the Interview

Untitel the Candidates Communication Skills in the einstellungsgesprchUncover the Candidates Communication Skills in the InterviewUncover the Candidates Communication Skills in the Interview ConlanBusiness runs on communication. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers Job Outlook 2016 report, employers ranked verbal communication skills as fruchtwein important for employees to have.So how do you assess these skills? Gauging a candidates communication skills is something that is measured from the initial contact to the last contact, says Jessica Meglio, senior recruiter at Turning the Corner, a Denver-based recruiting and career counseling firm. How quickly did they respond to the interview request? Did they provide a one-sentence answer or did they use a few sentences to express their interest and availability? These subtle interactions are very telling of how the candidate may communicate on the job. When its time to conduct the interview, heres how to get mor e details on the candidates communication skills.Compare Real Life to the Cover LetterYour candidate interactions have been fairly minimal to this point. So when you meet them for the first time, take a moment to assess the first impression they make. Are you surprised by how they communicate, or do you feel like youre getting what you expected?A persons voice or way of communicating should be similar, whether they are writing or speaking, says April Klimkiewicz, owner of Bliss Evolution, a career counseling agency based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.A big red flag for me is when the voice in the cover letter sounds like a completely different person than the person interviewing for the position. If everything seems similar, however, thats a good sign.Observe How They ListenCommunication is never one way your candidate will need to be a good listener as well.Someone who struggles with communicating effectively will just answer whatever they think is being asked, without stopping to co nsider if they have it right or asking clarifying questions, says Stephanie Troiano, executive recruiter at HireTalent in Brea, California.Pay attention not just to the content of the answers that candidates provide, but whether that information actually answers the question you asked.A huge part of communication is actually listening, and if you find your candidate suddenly veering off with something irrelevant to the question you asked, thats a red flag, Troiano says.Ask Behavioral Questions about CommunicationBehavioral interview questions those that ask the candidate to provide examples of what theyve done in the past are a great way to get more information about how a person communicates. These sort of interview questions provide insight into a persons communication style, says Jana Tulloch, a human resources professional for DevelopIntelligence, a Boulder, Colorado-based company that provides customized technical learning solutions. Here are some sample behavioral questions T ell me about a time when you had to communicate a difficult concept to someone and what challenges you encountered. Have you ever had to sell an unpopular idea? If so, what was the idea and how did you go about selling it? What was the most significant conflict you had with another employee? How did you resolve it? Tell me about a challenging customer that you had to handle. What was their concern and how did you address it?Again, listen to both the content of their answer as well as how they communicate that content. Do they tell their story in a clear and logical way, or do they dart off into different directions? Its about Role PlayingInterview questions about hypothetical scenarios shed light on how a candidate might deal with sensitive topics or difficult situations they have to communicate, says Joe Campagna, owner of My Virtual HR Director consultants. As interviewer, create questions around scenarios that could conceivably happen at your company especially in the role the per son is applying for and then evaluate how the candidate responds.Campagna gives the example of the question, Please demonstrate how you would tell a high-profile customer that their project was not going to make a deadline. Answers that are straightforward and clear show the candidate can communicate an answer that hedges or makes excuses might be an indication that the candidate shies away from difficult discussions.

You can achieve anything if you focus on 1 thing

You can achieve anything if you focus on 1 thingYou can achieve anything if you focus on 1 thingYou can achieve almost anything in lifeAs long as you focus on achieving one thing at a time. Its a time-tested strategy thats been shared by many successful people.Gary Keller and Jay Papasan even wrote awhole bookabout this simple idea. But dont let the simplicity of this idea fool you. Its one of the hardest things to implement in your life.Last year, I published an article about focusing on one thing called The Power Of Compounding. Ive received dozens of questions about it like, I get the idea. But I struggle with putting it into practice.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThats because we, human beings, are fickle. Our desires are constantly changing. We pursue new things before we finish our old goals. Were dealing with an invisible force that is always trying to confuse us. Instea d of focusing on one thing at a time, we platzset multiple goals, and think we can multitask ourselves to achieving them.Theres a discrepancy betweenwhat we know( to focus on one thing at a time) andwhat we do(focusing on everything at the same time). The question is not whether focusing on one thing is a good strategy (just look at the image at the top of this article) its HOW can we stick to it? In this article, I share how I apply this strategy to my life. But first, lets define the One Thing strategy. One thing per AREA of your lifeToo often people assume that you should only focus on one thing in your life, period. But thats not what this strategy is about. Its about being smart about what you pursue. Yes, you can achieve a lot of thingsBut just not at the same time. You cant build a career, get in shape, compete in marathons, write a book, invest in business, get kids, andtravel the world. But youcando all those things in a lifetime.I stick to one major priority per area of my lif e. Ive categorized my life as follows Career, health, learning, money, and relationships. That means I never work on more than one major project. I either write a book or create an online course. I also learn only one skill at a time. And I am either saving my money or am looking to invest it (naturally, Im saving most of the time). For my health, Im either building strengthorendurance. And so forth. These categories are not based on anything but my own perspective on life. You can categorize your life any way you want. And you dont need to criticize how others compartmentalize their lives. What matters is that we understandhowwe categorize ourownlives. Otherwise, theres no structure. And when theres no structure. Theres chaos. And when theres chaos, theres no one thing Thereseverything. Thats bad.Manage your desiresThe natural thing to do for most people is to start setting goals or picking one priority they want to focus on. But unless you havetrainedyour mind to focus on one thing, its not a smart thing to do.You must improve your focus muscle first.Otherwise, you set a goal, focus on one thing, and get back to your old behavior within a week. You want to change your mindset. Go from I want everything to I accept what I have.Thats the only way to live this one thing idea. In other words, control your desires.I recommend practicing Mindfulness or Stoicism for that. Both philosophies talk extensivelyabout detaching ourselves from our desires. I think our excessive desire for more is the reason we cant focus on one thing.Remove your desires, and you will have true freedom. The Stoic Epictetussaid it best in one of his classes(as captured by his student, Arian)Freedom is secured not by the fulfilling of mens desires, but by the removal of desire. If you manage your desire, you attack the problem at the core. In my experience, you CANT live a calm and focused life if youre always desiring more and new things.I have an article in which I shareZen Buddhism principles,a nd I have created a podcast series aboutStoic ideas. Look into those if you want to take control of your desires. All this doesnt mean we shouldnt desire to improve our lives. On the contrary, the whole purpose of life is to move forward. So dont be afraid to set goals and aim for great things. Just achieve one thing after the other.Practice single-taskingNow, its time to practice. For the next week, only do ONE thing at a time. If youre a modern human being that is used to technology, that will be very hard. But I guess you like the challenge, otherwise you wouldnt be reading this. So try thisGo for a walk (or workout) without listening to musicPut your phone in Do leid Disturb Mode for the whole dayDont pick it up when youre having a conversationWhen you are working, focus on a SINGLE task at a timeIn meetings, dont check your emailThis is also called being present. Just be less distracted. Thats all. And you can practice with anything by doing only one thing.Time to set 1 goal per area of your lifeOnly after you have controlled your desires and practiced doing one thing at a time are you ready to apply the One Thing strategy to your life. The reason you want to practice is that life is long. If you take the time to become less distracted by desires, the more reliable you will become. You will become a person who does what they say. You will become a person who achieves what they set out.And after you start achieving one thing after the other, you will get momentum. Your job is tokeepthe momentum. This is how people become happy and wealthy. Both those thingsadd upover time.Remember to keep the bigger picture in mind. You WILL achieve all your goals. Who cares whether you achieve them now or in the future? What matters is that you are not influenced by desire or outside forces.
